Description
***Elmwood Mine*** ((( Golden Fire Amber ))) ~~ Calcite Crystal Cluster on Limestone Matrix ~~ *With Lustrous Ruby Jack Sphalerite* Smith County - Tennessee * U.S.A.* 6" Inches tall x 5" x 4" inches wide ( 15.4 x 12.8 x 10.2 cm ) 3.44 Lbs - 1560 Grams The Elmwood Mine in Tennessee produced some of the worlds most beautiful calcite specimens before closing and this gorgeous golden fire amber cluster is obviously an exceptional example. This complex grouping of calcite sits on a grey limstone matrix and is dominated by a six inch modified scalenohedral crystal connected to another large termination on one side. There's a group of smaller double terminated crystals in front and a stack of clear to golden hued square rhombehedrons stairstepped on the outside edge. The crystals are all joined together in a tight formation and it's difficult to discern where one ends and another begins, it's mind boggling and defies any individual distinction. All the crystals have multiple complex terminations on both ends and they literally have hundreds of small showy outlined terminations in raised face relief covering the exterior surfaces that catch the light and remind me somewhat of flames dancing and flickering all aglow. The colors are astounding and demonstrate a phenomenal radiance that ranges from honey golden yellows mixed with reddish amber hues that resemble a primordial fire blazing inside. The backside surface of the limestone matrix features an outstanding cluster of gemmy lustrous ruby jack sphalerite featuring crystals up to 1.8 centimeters mixed with small golden calcites and many of the ruby jack crystals resemble gem red garnets mixed with fire opal more than sphalerite, it could be worth hundreds of dollars alone. There's also a line of sparkling ruby jack planted just below the the primary calcite terminations on the backside with additional sphalerite crystals lined around the front of the limestone matrix along with what appears to be a bed of small mixed habit primarily white calcite crystals and possibly a smidgen of dolomite blended with a few other odd minerals. Amazingly all the crystals are intact with no broken or chipped terminations, the cluster has a few very minor scuffs here and there but very few, nothing at all noticable and the showstopper side puts on a dazzling display sitting perfectly at a slight angle as shown in the first photograph. This intact limestone matrix cluster with outstanding ruby jack and clear calcite rhombs demonstrates a very even fire amber coloration throughout and the fine surface sculpting is detailed head and shoulders above any other specimens I've ever seen. The Elmwood Mine was closed due to the declining prices of zinc and world class specimens of gorgeous calcite like this eye popper are sadly no longer being produced.
