Description
Current Lot Ugo Foscolo (1778- 1827) Rare, important, autograph one-page cover letter , 8vo, signed by Ugo Foscolo the greatest exponent of the Italian Neoclassicism. The letter, dated 'Dec. 7, Saturday Evening', is addressed to the famous Scottish publisher John Murray (1778-1843), who published Foscolo's Le ultime lettere di Jocopo Ortis in London, in April 1817 (one year after the poet's arrival to England) and Ricciarda in 1820. In this letter, characterized by Foscolo's unmistakable elegant writing , reference is made to a text to be published: 'Let me then have a sight of you - I have to give you a manuscript, the publication of which will depend on your advice'. The letter ends with an amusing linguistic pastiche: 'Buona notte - Very Cold- Adieu, Yours faithfully'. Extremely fascinating document written by the great poet in the early years of his sojourn in London. Autograph address and black wax seal on cover. Traces of an old restoration may be found.
