Description
Current Lot Henry James (1843-1916) Splendid, long autograph letter signed by one of the greatest masters of modern literature. Henry James wrote this twelve-page letter dated 'March 12, 1906' on 'Lamb House' headed paper (4to). Addressed to Henry's brother William, psychologist and philosopher, this writing is full of references and hints at the family context and offers an interesting insight into the relationship between the two brothers: 'I rejoice in your splendid long letter [...] in spite of its sod burden of lurid revelation [,..] l've felt in my bones that "the last straws" the famous fatal amount of the adage, must be accumulating on your Mother's back. Any fresh imposition of them will be fatal, will be the tragic irremediable end of their [..] She and your dad have now done everything in the world for everyone in the world, again & again & again [..] l trust with all my heart, that such impositions as Rebecca Clark [..] will have come and gone once for all'. This letter is not included in Leon Edel (ed.), Henry James Letters (1974- 1984), Harvard University Press, and therefore it should be considered as unpublished to this day.
