Description
Besides this item, I have listed over 25 antique Judaica items at "buy it now", in all price ranges, just check my other auctions.10 inches high, 9.5 inches wide. Weighs 5 pounds. This is an early 18th century brass menorah from Italy, it dates to circa 1730 - 1750. The columns, arch and backplate still retains a lot of gilding; yes, this menorah was fire-gilded, as was the custom with high end brass items from the 17th and early 18th century in Italy. The servant light is missing, you can see where it was held in the small empty square on the top left hand side. What makes this menorah fascinating and UNIQUE is the family crest in the center. It is a heavy and thick well cast brass plaque. It has a knights head at top, and in the center is a man in the sun, a man in the moon (shown as a crescent moon, quite unusual in itself), and a dolphin or fish. Shown in the book photos are a similarly constructed menorah with an applied brass plaque from the collection of the Israel Museum labeled as 18th century Italian, a family crest on an Italian paroches from 1676 (curtain for the ark which holds the Torah scroll in the synagogue), an Italian gravestone with a knights head and a man in the sun dating to between the 14th and 18th century, and a book on European Jewish gravestones, which show other man in the suns.Notice how in the gravestones description it explains how the sun and moon are associated with Kabbalah, and how the sun is associated with the Chevra Kadisha (burial society). As you know, Chevra Kadisha related items are the rarest in all of Judaica, and the most desireable. Its quite probable that the Italian - Jewish family to whom this crest belonged to was part of the Chevra Kadisha. The only "problems" this artifact has, is that for some of the screws, the threading was replaced in the last 50 or 60 years. You can see from the reverse side of the crest plaque; two of the screws are recent, while the other two are original, worn down to almost flat nubs. This goes for the oil pan as well. Of course the nuts and rings that hold the oil pan and the plaque to the backplate itself, while very rusty and corroded, are also 50 or so years old.A clear return policy with an item of this expense should be easy to understand; for any reason you want to return this piece, its no problem, just as long as it is within 30 days of the auction end. Priority mail with signature confirmation included in the sale price, for buyers outside the USA, this will be sent via registered airmail. In person examinations are welcome, if paying in person, it must be by cash only. Otherwise, checks/wire transfers/paypal is fine, after payment has cleared the item will be mailed. Check my feedback and buy with confidence.
