Description  19th century wall mounted match safe, or match holder.  Made of cast iron with worn silver paint.  Ingeniously designed with a raised pin on the hinged lid, such that when the lid is raised, it shuts automatically to help reduce the risk of fire.  Decorative back has two holes for mounting on the wall.  Bottom is rough finished to serve as the match striker.  The lid has the following in raised lettering:SELF CLOSINGFOR MATCHES. & C.PATENTED. DEC. 20, 1864.D.M. & Co.NEW HAVEN."D.M. & Co." is the Davenport Mallory & Co. of New Haven, Connecticut.  We assume that the abbreviation "C" in "FOR MATCHES & C." stands for "cigarettes".  This matchsafe measures 4 inches long, about 2 1/2 inches deep; the back is about 2 inches high.  This is a very nice old matcholder.As always, we are dedicated to providing customer service.
