It is the same size & shape as those made by Will & Finck and other Bar room suppliers, as shown on page 49 of the Knifemakers of Old San Francisco book. This is shown as the Deluxe polished Rosewood, silver plated, brass hinged model costing $ 2.50 in the 19th Century; 5 times the cost of a similar but plain piece in Laurel wood. It is very heavy duty and well made piece, made from select Rosewood with beautiful dark striped grains in the wood. About 10 1/4" long x 1 13/16" wide x 3" tall, and weighs 1 lb. 4 1/2 ounces. The 2 pieces of shaped Rosewood are connected by a heavy duty 2 piece cast brass or bronze hinge that is silver plated, secured by 2 large Iron screws. There are incised grooves cut into the inside to funnel the squeezed juice into a drink or container. The soft silver plating, as expected, has been worn from actual use, with the base metal showing through.
