Description
AMERICA'S PRIDE ** VERY SCARCE ** ARMED CONFEDERATE CIVIL WAR SOLDIER w/ CS BUCKLE AMBROTYPE PHOTO This offering is for a beautiful original 1/6th plate ambrotype of a Confederate Civil War Soldier. This image has just been discovered in Southern Illinois and this is it's first offering to the general public. The image measures app. 2 3/4" by 3ΒΌ" and features the soldier in a waist up pose holding his pistol proudly displayed across his chest. The coat he is wearing appears to be of coarse cloth with an early war style nine button front and eppaulets on the shoulders. The soldier also wears his belt with oval brass buckle clearly visible. The soldiers buckle and his buttons are highlighted in gold, rendering the buttons unreadible. The buckle however, features the initials "SC" with the initials reversed due to it's being an ambro. The photographer even reversed the gold highlighting to follow the visible reversed "CS" on the buckle itself. Please note that while the embossed "S" on the buckle itself is easily visible behind the gold highlights the "C" is somewhat obscured and harder to make out with only the gold highlighted "C" is easily visible. I have included a second, "reversed" image of the buckle just below the first image so you can see it from both the SC and CS views. Under close inspection it also appears that the pistol is either a Griswold & Gunnison Revolver or a Colt Navy Revolver, it certainly looks to me to a be a Griswold. The condition of the image is as you see below. The second and third images show the photo with a typical black background and a white background so you can more easily see the imperfections. There are overall rub and scratch marks vsible on the image that makes one think someone may have tried to disfigure the image on purpose. You should be able to see all imperfections quite easily below, the emulsion itself is tight with very little if any flaking and the image quality aside from the scratches is quite good. Included with the image is a second ambrotype that was included with it when we aquired it. The second image appears to be the same gent wearing a normal suit of clothing. The images are housed in the original leatherette case which has split in two and needs to be rejoined. That's about it, a wonderful very scarce Civil War Confederate Ambrotype for your consideration. This great Armed Confederate Soldier With CS Buckle Photograph will make an excellent addition to someone's collection, shouldn't it be yours!!!
