Description
Special Edition Artists Proof, One of a Kind!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This auction offers a singular opportunity to the savvy collector of modern art of historical relevancy. Envisioning a progressive utopia through the dry prose of the New York Times, the paper acts as material anchor to the larger performance-based project unfolding in media and other arenas of shared public culture. When initially distributed to great fervor on 11/12/08, Alex S. Jones, NY Times reporter and authority on the paper's history remarked that " [the spoof paper] will probably become a collector's item." Indeed, a small portion of the edition has appeared in auction and has inspired several unauthorized digital reproductions on the black market. This exclusive, one-shot auction is for the sole artist's proof recovered from the historic print run. Due to its relative rarity and to features distinct from the rest of the edition, an artist's proof elevates the status of any collection. Conversely, the paper's common value and resale value in secondary markets are expected to be quite robust -- by some estimates surpassing the edition value by exponential proportions, according to an in-house report compiled earlier this year. Because the proof state was printed prior to the editioned run, it proffers an exclusive perspective of the process of artistic production. Printed on standard newsprint, the edition was produced using a collection of four metal offset plates. In any multi-color print run, the artist must supervise the initial calibration of the plates -- assuring that they are positioned most advantageously for artistic effect. At this point in production, the intervention of the artist's hand is therefore most apparent, offering the collector a unique glimpse into the intentions of the artist (see photo documentation above to witness the unique color separation.) Paired with a print from the edition, this proof buttresses an understanding of the total project, whilst capturing a minute landmark moment in its production. While this paper resembles the perhaps thousands of other papers discarded by the printer for unfortunate defects, a handful of these papers have been designated as "states," documenting the evolution of the print run. Only this one print was retained by the artists as a proof: representative of the course of -- yet divergent from -- the official distributed edition. This print has until now been a part of the private collection of one of the artists involved with the project -- now being sold due to her unfortunate and untimely death. The paper is in MINT condition, has neither been unfolded nor framed, and has been kept in strict low-humidity environs. The print is accompanied by an AUTHENTIC certificate of authenticity. DO NOT MISS THIS ONCE IN A "ONCE IN A LIFETIME" OPPORTUNITY.
