This Amish quilt was purchased at a charity auction known as a "Mud Sale" in Pennsylvania.  Each year starting mid February through the first Saturday in April these "Mud Sales" are held to raise money for the local volunteer fire departments throughout Lancaster County and its surrounding areas in Pennsylvania.  The auctions are called "Mud Sales" because it's usually very muddy due to the snow melting and the ground thawing. This quilt design is known as "Birds & Patches Sampler" and is a pieced and appliqued quilt with embroidery.   Primary colors are blue and red.   The quilt has navy blue binding on all four straight edges with rounded corners.  The back is white with a screen print of blue leaf and circles (see last picture) and the white stitching does show through, so this quilt could be used with the back side up for a different look.  The flowers and birds are appliqued with hand embroidery work.  The white fabric used in the birds and flowers blocks has a floral screen print.  There are some thread tails visible.  I left them attached because this is how I bought the quilt.  This allows you to better see how the work is done. This quilt is unusual in that the back is a print fabric and it has round corners.  (B286) This quilt is one of the smaller ones we have in stock.  It measures 88-inches by 109-inches, so it could be used on a full size bed or a queen bed with a bed skirt.  It is pictured on a pillow top queen bed with a short footboard.   Please email before bidding if you have any questions or want more pictures. There may still be some pencil marks visible, but they will probably disappear after the first washing.  The Amish use pencils to mark the quilting templates so they know where to stitch.  The quilt is made of cotton and is machine washable in cool water.  The Amish recommend adding 1-cup vinegar to the first wash to set the colors.   Can be machine dried on low, but air drying is best.  However, since this quilt does have some hand appliqued work, you may be better off having it dry cleaned.
