The group consists of: British 1939-45 Star with "Battle of Britain" Bar; British Air Crew Europe Star; British 1939-45 War Medal. Sergeant Smith enlisted August 14, 1939, and became a pilot May 20, 1940. He joined 257 Squadron flying Spitfires on May 22, 1940. On August 8, 1940, Smith was flying a Hurricane, and attacked 20 Ju 88's that were bombing a convey in the English Channel. Approximately 30 Messerschmitt BF 109's and 20 110's dived on the Hurricanes of 257 Squadron. Three British planes were shot down. The Sergeant bailed out at 10,000-15,000 feet, and landed in the channel. There were a number of German air/sea rescue boats and planes in the area. "Lord Haw-Haw" announced over the radio that Sergeant Smith was a POW, and gave details of his family, however, there is no record of Smith ever being a POW. The British listed him as missing and presumed dead. His body was never recovered. The awards are court mounted for display with official ribbon and are in Extremely Fine condition. Sold with original telegram of death notification; original letter of condolence from King George VI; original Royal Air Force identification bracelet (Silver, impressed: 754895 Sjt. Smith, K.B., C.of E.); original medals mailing box; original Royal Air Force pocketbook, 1937 (inscribed: 754895 Sjt. Operational service brought to an end through death, disability, or wound, also qualified for the award of the 1939-45 Star, irrespective of length of service. The British "Battle of Britain" Bar was awarded to crews of fighter aircraft who flew at least one operational sortie in the Battle of Britain July 10 to October 31, 1940. The Air Crew Europe Star was awarded to Royal Air Force and Commonwealth Air Forces personnel who took part in operational flying from the United Kingdom over Europe between September 3, 1939 and June 5, 1944. The British 1939-45 War Medal was awarded to all full time personnel of the Armed Forces serving for 28 days or more, between September 3, 1939, and September 2, 1945.
