Description
Bilston Battersea Floral Egg Box The appeal of Bilston Battersea Enamel Boxes lies in their superb quality and in the association with the 18th century - an age of great style and elegance. Their imaginative designs are frequently inspired by artefacts in famous museums - we worked closely with the Victoria & Albert museum and the British Museum in London, the Smithsonian institute in Washington, the Art Institute of Chicago among other renowned international artistic organisations. The manufacture of English pictorial enamels began in about 1750 in a factory on the premises of York House, in Battersea, then still a rural area outside London's boundaries. In 1756 the Battersea operation closed, but by the end of the decade production methods developed there had been dispersed to workshops in Bilston, Birmingham, and other towns in the Midlands region of England that had acquired the remaining materials and working stocks from the closed business. Some of these later firms copied the original Battersea wares very closely, but stylistic changes emerged over the next decades. The name Battersea enamels is often used to describe the entire production, which continued until 1840, but the term English enamels, or English painted enamels, is more accurate for those made after 1756. It is the sympathetic co-operation between designer and manufacturer that has resulted in the exceptionally high quality that is immediately identifiable in Halcyon Days Enamels. Here we are offering one of four Bilston Battersea Floral Egg Box , each in the original satin line presentation box. These are all signed and measure 2.5 inches tall and 1.75 inches wide. This and others are are all in great condition. These are no longer produced and are becoming very rare. This is a part of a small collection of Enamels from a estate in Palm Beach .
