Description
*Please read full description before placing your bid* Offered for your consideration is a stunning marbleized Green and blue Art Deco Bendix Model # 526-C Catalin Tube Radio made circa 1945 in Baltimore, Maryland and designed by Frank Glover. This example is in excellent condition containing original factory marbleized green catalin knobs and curved plastic dial scale. John Sideli, in his landmark book, "Classic Plastic Radios of the 1930's & 1940's has this to say about this extremely successful selling model in the catalin genre, "An extremely stylish, successful, and unusual design. Dramatic in its use of black, a color seldom encountered in Catalin radios. Conceptually unique in design and construction, the top and sides are combined in one U-shaped piece that fits down over the other major component, which forms the front and base of the radio. The two rounded corner pieces that bolt onto either side of the dial are a unique feature unlike anything found on any other radio. The five horizontal grooves that stretch across the front of the radio were cut in during the finishing process after the parts were cast. The appearance of these radios may vary greatly according to the tone of the green and the amount of yellow marbleizing that occurs. They are frequently underpriced, but a wonderful addition to any collection." There are no cracks, chips, nicks, dings, scratches, repairs, or tube burns on the radio. The plastic dial scale is factory original and in good condition showing minimal wear, this is the earlier seldom seen dial. The chassis is clean and complete and currently playing well, I was able to pick up 3-4 stations. This would be a great addition to your art deco office or home decor. MAKE - Bendix MODEL - #526C YEAR - 1946 CASE MATERIAL- Catalin, the Gem of Plastics SIZE- 11 1/8” W x 7 ” H x 6” D CONDITION- This radio is a beautiful, working radio. There are no cracks, chips, nicks, dings, scratches, repairs, or tube burns, now or in the past. The marbleized green catalin knobs are factory original and in excellent condition. This example has the earlier seldom seen dial lense. Card board backing is factory original. In the bottom picture it shows one of the rubber feet as missing. I have since found one original and installed it in place. The radio sits level now. I have hand refinished the cabinet expertly by hand (no machine sanding) to display the true color and beauty. If you are looking for a spectacularly marbleized example with no damage, this is as good as it gets! CHASSIS/PLAYING CONDITION-The chassis is clean, complete, and I was able to pick up 3-4 stations that were clear. As a reminder, these vintage catalin radios are not recommended for everyday use, nor should they be played for extended periods of time as that could cause tube burns to the cabinet.
