BARKER FLOWER FAIRIES TEA SET Featuring Rose and Blackthorn Fairies What a wonderful gift for a child at Christmas.  You can order this set and a matching book.  Imagine a tea party while looking at the beautiful flower fairy pictures.   In fact there is a Flower Fairy  book, How to Host a Flower Fairy Tea Party, isbn: 0723253609.  My daughter best loved the toys that had matching books.   This is a set that will be handed down through generations.   This is a beautiful set made in Germany by Reutter.  It comes with a Teapot, sugar, and creamer, and 4 cups with gold rimmed saucers.  The bottom of the teapot is marked with Reuter Porcelain Germany, The flower fairy Collection, copyright the estate of C.M. Barker 2002.  The teapot is approx 7" high with lid, the cups are a little over 2" high, and the saucers are about 4" in diameter.   Cicely Mary Barker was a popular, children's book Illustrator and British Artist. She was born June 28, 1895 in Croydon, Surrey, England. As Cicely Barker suffered from epilepsy as a child, she was unable to go to school, so was educated at home. She developed creative drawing and writing skills were at an early age.  At 13, Cicely was enrolled at Croydon Art Society and at the age of 16 was elected a Life Member, the youngest person ever to receive such an honor.   When Cicely Mary Barker's was only 15, several of her works were bought and published by the stationery printer, Raphael Tuck in 1911.    In 1923 Cicely Mary Barker's flower fairy illustrations and verses were published.  These were the "Flower Fairies of the Spring", the first of the flower fairy series.     Cicely always used real-life models to create her beautiful paintings.  Little children became her much loved models, holding a flower, twig or blossom.  This provided her with the accuracy she needed to depict the shape, texture and form of the plant, changing only the size to match that of the child.    Despite her success she remained a quiet, modest figure and was able to continue to paint until her eyesight deteriorated in her later years.      Cicely Mary Barker died February 16, in 1973 at 77 years of age.
