Description
TRUMAN WRITES TO AN AMERICAN RELIGIOUS LEADER ABOUT “AFFIRMING ‘FAITH IN THE CURATIVE POWER OF FREEDOM AND IN THE CREATIVE CAPACITY OF FREE MEN’”; THE LETTER HAS THE ONLY DIRECT MENTION OF THE MARSHALL PLAN THAT I COULD LOCATE HARRY TRUMAN (1884-1972). Truman was the Thirty-third President. SAMUEL McCREA CAVERT (1888-1976). Cavert was an important Presbyterian minister and the executive of the Federal Council of the Churches of Christ. TLS. 1pg. 7” x 9”. March 12, 1948. Washington. A typed letter signed “Harry S Truman” on White House letterhead. He wrote to The Reverend Samuel McCrea Cavert of The Federal Council of the Churches of Christ in America, located in New York. Truman wrote “May I acknowledge with gratitude your letter of March ninth with which was enclosed copy of the petition to Congress in support of the European Recovery Program which has been signed by more than seven hundred church leaders of many denominations. This action is encouraging, particularly since the petition endorses the forthright support which the Federal Council of the Churches of Christ in American accorded the ERP. The preamble to the petition, by adopting the language of the Federal Council affirming ‘faith in the curative power of freedom and in the creative capacity of free men’, states admirably the spirit in which we are trying to carry out the Marshall Plan. Such sympathetic understanding is most heartening.” The Marshall Plan, also known as the European Recovery Program, began in July 1947. The United States spent billions of dollars rebuilding war-torn western Europe and ceased the program in 1951. Though the Soviets were invited to participate, they declined. Reverend Cavert met with Truman in the Oval Office about a half-dozen times. Their first communication was in August 1945, when Cavert wrote a famous protest telegram to Truman, stating that “Many Christians [are] deeply disturbed over [the] use of atomic bombs against Japanese cities because of their necessarily indiscriminate destructive efforts and because their use sets extremely dangerous precedent for [the] future of mankind…”. Truman wrote back two days later that “Nobody is more disturbed over the use of Atomic bombs than I am but I was greatly disturbed over the unwarranted attack by the Japanese on Pearl Harbor and their murder of our prisoners of war. The only language they seem to understand is the one we have been using to bombard them. When you have to deal with a beast you have to treat him as a beast. It is most regrettable but nevertheless true.” The American Book Prices Current and AmericanaExchange.com show no other letters mentioning the Marshall Plan ever for sale. The letter, on sea-foam green paper, is in fine condition, with a mailing folds that affects nothing.
