Description
The Olympic Games 1936 3-D raumbild book - 100 views! Pre-1960 books about Stereo Photography, or illustrated with stereo pairs or anaglyphs, are relatively rare these days. We are happy to offer the following 3-D book for your consideration and bidding. "Smith Number NNN" refers to the reference for this book in "The Books, Treatises and Manuals of Stereoscopy: A Chronological Review of Published Work 1838-2005" Compiled by Sam N. Smith. self-published, ISBN: 0-9735037-0-X, 2005. Die Olympischen Spiele 1936 (The Olympic Games 1936), by Ludwig Haymann, Raumbild-Verlag Otto Shoenstein, Diessen, Germany. With 100 black-and-white stereoscopic views by Heinrich Hoffmann, (State Picture Correspondent for the Nazi Party - and Hitler's personal photographer). Cloth-cover Hardbound A4 format (11 3/4" x 8 1/4") with 55 pages of text and 100 real photographic (not lithograph) 6x13cm paper print stereo views. Smith Number 211. This "Raumbild" (Spatial Image) book has 1/2" thick covers which contain pockets to hold the stereoscopic prints, and a folding stereoscopic viewer. For this volume, the first 22 stereo cards are pasted onto 8 heavy black cardstock pages that are bound into the pages section of the book. The remaining 78 stereo cards may be removed from the 3 pockets in the back of the book (see photos) and inserted into the folding viewer, which is stored in a pocket in the front cover. The viewer may also be used for the pasted-in images by simply placing and aligning the viewer windows on top of each image on the page. Historically this is an incredible Three Dimensional photo documentation of the 1936 Olympic games in Berlin. The photos probably were taken with medium format 6x13cm Heidoscop (glass plates) or Rolleidoscop (120 Rollfilm) stereo cameras, both made by Franke & Heideke, the same company that made the famous Rolleiflex. Many of the symbols that we now associate with the Olympic Games originated at the 1936 games, and they are documented here: Fireworks, The Olympic Flame, and even an Olympic Bell. There is a chilling close-up of Hitler in the Olympic Stadium, and others showing Nazi officials at the games, but the majority of the images are devoted to the pageantry and events of the Olympics and the various competitive events. One view shows filmmaker Leni Riefenstahl with some of the black athletes, and there are several views showing some of the early Television cameras and the film cameras that were used to document this event. (I understand that the TV was not used for broadcast, but for closed-circuit feeds to "TV Pubs" located near the Olympic Stadium). Whether you are a collector of 3-D images, or a collector of Olympic Memorabilia, this is a rare, unique, and must-have book. The book itself is in Very Good condition. The beige cloth cover is aged, with a few stains front and back, mostly near the edges. The title, and the five-color Olympic rings on the cover, are in very good condition, with only a few small chips in the paint-like ink stamped into the cover (see photo). There is also some very faint pencil marking on the rings. The spine and binding are solid and intact, with no breaks or tears (which is very common in these old books). The inside cover marbled dark green paper and end flaps are in fully intact, with no tears at the edges of the viewer pocket, or the stereo view card pockets. This is also a rare variation of this book title. I have seen several other copies, and all of them have a pocket that was designed to hold a special Raumbild stereoscope that the company had made around the year this was published. This copy has a pocket designed for the Zeiss Jena Aerotopograph stereoscope, which the Raumbild publishing company used for it's first 3-D books starting in 1933. This book must have been bound just before they switched over to the later viewer design. However, I personally think that this beautiful chrome-plated viewer has better optics, and is more robust, than the later Raumbild viewers. The viewer is in Excellent condition with no rust. Last, there is the condition of the views themselves. The first 22 views, which are pasted into the book, as well as the remaining 78 views, all 100 total, are intact, and in Excellent condition. NO PICTURES ARE MISSING! I have seen this book in inferior condition, and with missing images, sell for $500 and more. I feel that this is a real bargain at a starting bid of $695.00. Feel free to search the Internet for this title and you will see that they are going in auctions, or have gone, for much higher prices. Here is a chance to get a real piece of history, and in 3-D.
