The compact is approximately 3 ¼” " X 2 ¾” X 5/16” thick.  The beautiful enamel picture on the top is not a transfer, but a hand painted picture of a landscape with figures. Two young lovers are the center of attraction. The woman is seated with a basket of flowers, the man is standing, his arm wrapped gracefully around a tree. There are also two young women, who look like servants, sitting close by. A fountain with two stone carvings of naked children is in the background. There are also seven sheep in the painting. One woman appears to be feeding the sheep. There is water, sky, a fountain, a man and women, etc. – this painting has it all! The colors are brilliant – greens, reds, blues and yellows. The enameling is in very good condition with no chips, or scratches. An enamel ultramarine blue border frames the painting.  There is hand-engraved silver ornamentation on the cover as well. There is an ornate hand carving into the silver on the reverse as well as carving around the entire edge. The beveled mirror on the inside of the compact is in very good condition with no silver loss. The screen inside is original. The locking device works perfectly.  There is a mark on the edge of the mirror frame near the top that says "800” and one next to it that is hard to read – probably a maker’s mark. This is a very rare and hard to find vintage compact. A wonderful addition to any collection and a fabulous gift to the woman or man who has everything.
